How to calm down your anxiety

Avoid caffeine

Caffeine is a well-known anxiety inducer. However, for me, I am into caffeine such that I even forgot how sensitive I am to it.

When feeling anxious or looking forward to those feelings, make a conscious decision to stop drinking caffeine. Caffeinated soft drinks too shouldn’t be taken.

Do away with alcohol

Anxiety can be so exhausting such that the only way you think you can get relieved is by taking a cocktail to help you relax.

This may work but for only a while. Why? Because alcohol changes the levels of serotonin, and other neurotransmitters in the brain, making your symptoms even worse. You will just feel anxious after the alcohol has worn off.

Use fragrance

When your anxious thoughts start brewing, take lavender oil, smear it on your hand for the scent. This is because lavender is well known for its calming properties.

Try smelling lavender during your practice if you engage yourself in the practice of mindfulness or meditation. After some time, you’ll link the feeling of relaxation with that scent and this will make it more effective.

Seek the help of a professional

You should seek help from a professional if your feelings of anxiety are making it hard for you to function. Although, talking to friends can also help. They might advise you on what you need to do.

Locate a mantra

Have a mantra that you can always say when you feel anxious. It will help you feel calm, especially when you’ve been attacked by panic disorder.

Drink water

Not drinking water can make your symptoms worse although you might not realize this. Dehydration can cause heart palpitations which can lead to feelings of panic, which are likely to trigger an anxiety attack.

Be in solitude for a while

Find a reason to be alone when feeling anxious. Do anything that makes you happy as long as you are alone.

You can always find that alone time without being rude. It is also a chance for you to practice mindfulness. Which can be used to reduce symptoms of anxiety and panic.
